Quantidoc

Novel method for quantifying mucous cells.

Quantidoc has developed a diagnostic method of quantitatively measuring the immune system of fish through mucosal mapping. It is faster and runs at significantly lower costs than other methods. Applying the technology to the challenges facing the aquaculture industry enables great savings for fish farmers, and breaks the barrier between research and day-to-day industry usage.

The diagnostic method quantitatively assesses the distribution, abundance and volume of mucous cells in the skin, gills and guts of fish.

Quantidoc is:

  • diagnostic – assesses health status
  • quantitative, objective & comparable
  • statistically robust
  • links diet & immunity
  • summarises the effects of >200 genes
  • an important tool for monitoring and improving fish health and welfare

The Quantidoc‘s Quality Index is obtained through quantifying the mucosal tissue parameters as mucus cell size and mucus cell density. The mucosal tissue of any animal or human is related to the immune system and therefore indicates the health and wellness of the body. If the animal is ill, it will also be visible in our quality index. According to Dr. Karin Pittman, lead researcher at Quantidoc, the method is statistically objective and reliable.

The mucosal tissue parameters are quantified by the algorithms developed under the stereology field. Changes in the mucosal parameters indicate variations in the health and welfare situation of the animal.

The mucosal tissue condition is related to factors surrounding the animal, whether in the diet or environment, as well as the effect of medicines. There is also a clear relationship between the skin condition and abundance of parasites and pathogens.

Quantidoc has several international and national partners in the industry.
