Welfaremeter Expert System

Invention

A new system to MEASURE, ASSESS and ADVICE on fish pens. The new Welfaremeter Expert System is developed by researchers at the Institute of Marine Research and others. The system is a combined monitoring and alert system that provides real-time updates of the environmental conditions in the fish pens, and assess if the environment, prosperity and welfare of the farmed fish satisfy today’s requirements for animal welfare. The system includes an intelligent data program with access to all known expertise concerning the coherence between environment and fish welfare. The program uses this knowledge to report the fish status in each affiliated pen. If necessary, the system suggests immediate actions and long term measures to improve the conditions. The system will alert if something is about to go wrong. Each pen/fish farm gets a homepage with a secure log-on for on-line monitoring.

Applications

All data collected from the system is immediately analysed and available to a fish farmer (and/or a company headquarters) displayed through the internet accessed web page.

Advantages

- extensively monitoring of a fish pen environmental conditions
- immediate updates of the conditions on customer interface
- evaluation and benchmarking of data
- expert advice upon next steps
- easy access and clearly presented data

Technology

The Welfaremeter Expert System has been developed by researchers at Insitute of Marine Research and TendoTech AS. The idea for the Welfaremeter was contemplated by researcher and engineer Trygve Gytre from the Animal Welfare Group at the Institute of Marine Research, Norway.
