UK Chat Magasine published interview of ME-recovered Elene from Haukeland study

The UK Chat Magasine has interviewed Elene, the 26-year old patient who has recovered from ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) after having received a new treatment by researchers at Haukeland Hospital in Bergen. Elene was part of a study by Drs Mella and Fluge, who have recently published a study in PLOs One regarding the successful usage of B-cell depletion (reduction) as therapeutic intervention in CFS/ME. Chat Magasine is one of UKs major magasines targeting mass market women, and the article with Elene appears on page 61 in the Christmas issue published 15th of December. Chat Magasine is a weekly publication and circulated to 430,674 readers in the UK.

At its worst, Elene (26) could easily sleep 18 hours a day. Now she is bursting with energy. An eight year lie-down is over. Elene was one of three patients participating a pilot study of patients suffering from ME, lead by Prof. Olav Mella and Dr.med Øystein Fluge at Haukeland University Hospital. Today she is one in about thirty who are receiving maintenance treatment in yet another study. Professor Carmen Scheibenbogen from the Institute of Medical Immunology at Berlin Charité, who has had many years of experience with the mysterious medical condition, is convinced that this study is a decisive step forward and calls it “a breakthrough in the treatment of this medical condition”.

Avdelingsdirektør/Professor Olav Mella og Overlege Dr.Med. Øystein Fluge tok imot premien på kr 100 000,- under Bergen Næringsråd sin årskonferanse igår. Kreftlegene benyttet anledningen til å rette en spesiell takk til sykehusdirektør Stener Kvinnsland og pasientene som har vært med i studien. Erna Solberg møtte prisvinnerne, direktør bedriftsmarked i Sparebanken Vest Henning Nordgulen, og BTOs direktør Anders Haugland etter prisutdelingen

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a puzzling medical condition, and one that many people suffer from. Its cause is unknown, and until now there has been no effective treatment for it. Now, a team of Norwegian researchers have had their first treatment breakthrough, using medication from the sphere of cancer medicine. Carmen Scheibenbogen from the Institute of Medical Immunology at Berlin Charité has had many years of experience with the mysterious medical condition, and is convinced that the Norwegian study is a decisive step forward. “This is important news, especially for patients in Germany, as the situation that CFS patients encounter here is particularly bad”, she says.

Ny teknologi for skreddersydd livmorkreftbehandling vant Helse Vest Innovasjonspris

Professor Helga Salvesen ved Kvinneklinikken på Haukeland og Professor Lars A. Akslen ved Gades Institutt vant Helse Vest Innovasjonspris forrige torsdag 13. oktober for å ha utviklet en ny teknologi som kan gi pasienter med livmorkreft bedre og mer skreddersydd behandling. Teknologien er utviklet i samarbeid med forskere ved Harvard og MIT i USA. Tidligere i år fremforhandlet BTO, på vegne av forskerne, en lisensavtale med det amerikanske selskapet Ovagene Oncology Inc. Hensikten var å få utviklet en konkret test til nytte for pasienter. Testen er nå ferdigutviklet og ble tilgjengelig for leger i det amerikanske markedet i august 2011.

Psykologisk førstehjelp for barn og ungdom

Barn og ungdom kan nå få hjelp til selvhjelp når livet butter imot. Psykologspesialist Solfrid Raknes har i samarbeid med noen av de fremste psykologekspertene og barnepsykiaterene i landet utviklet et psykologisk førstehjelpsskrin. Skrinet ble lansert 18. februar, og er nå til salgs i bokhandlere i Norge. Førstehjelpsskrinet er det første behandlingsopplegget i landet som gir barn og unge hjelp til å behandle følelses-sår på egenhånd ved hjelp av ekspert-råd.
