Novel one step process technology for the conversion of lignin to economic valuable liquid

With present technology, the production of ethanol from wood is not competitive compared to fossil fuels. This invention changes that. A tree or a plant consists of approximately 70 % cellulose and 30 % lignin. The present production of ethanol focuses solely on exploiting the cellulose, leaving lignin as a waste product. With this novel process technology it is possible also to convert the lignin to economic valuable liquid, a prerequisite for profitable production of ethanol. The output of the production process is biofuel that can be used with the present motor technology and green platform chemicals like phenol. With wood being one of the most abundant renewable resources, capable of exploitation in large scale, biofuel can thus be produced without affecting cultivated land

Applicat ions

The LTL process targets owners of raw materials like wood and lignin, producers of biofuel and producers of chemicals.

Advantages

- Simple and efficient one step process. An advantage over the present expensive three step processes, that delivers  organic products with limited area of application
– 100 % yield. All of the lignin converts to economic valuable liquid
– Low cost process
– Customization. The process can be customized in accordance to desired product mix, i.e. the process can be optimized for either biofuel or platform chemicals

Technology

The raw material is solid lignin. The lignin is mixed with formic acid and a mix of solvents and led into a pressure chamber. The result of the process is a liquid two-phase system. The organic phase consists mainly of chemicals that can be used as biofuel. The water phase consists of different green platform chemicals.
